History

Bageshwar’s Origins

Bageshwar is believed to have been founded by King Baijnath, who reigned between 1710 and 1740 A.D. According to local legend, the king was traveling through the region when he stumbled across an image of Lord Shiva carved into a rock.

Impressed by this divine sign, he named the town after his son, Bagirath—hence “Bageshwar.” To this day, locals still revere Bagirath as their founder and celebrate him with an annual fair every January.

The Temple Scene

Located in Bageshwar are several ancient temples dedicated to various Hindu gods and goddesses, including Shiva and Parvati. The most famous temple is Baijnath Temple, which dates back to the 13th century A.D.

This temple has been destroyed several times over its long history—most recently during India’s fight for independence from Britain in 1947—but it remains a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus from around India. In addition to religious sites like these, visitors can also explore nearby caves or take part in some adventure sports such as trekking and mountain biking.
