The Origins of GuptKashi
The earliest records of GuptKashi can be traced back to the 8th century AD when it was referred to as “Gopeshwar”. The name “GuptKashi” (which means “hidden Kashi”) was given to it by a scholar in the 11th century. It is believed that the scholar stumbled upon this hidden city while searching for an ancient temple which he thought was located somewhere near Kashi (modern-day Varanasi).
Over the years, more and more people began referring to this area as “GuptKashi” instead of “Gopeshwar”. This unique name stuck and is still used today.
